CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Jean Prouvaire "Jehan"
Age: 23ish. Hugo never says for sure.
Canon: Les Miserables
Canon Point: Post Death
Character Information: Wiki Info Here!
Personality:
Jean Prouvaire is, before anything else, a member of the race of poets, and music makers, and quite the follower of the Romantic movement. Romantic, in this case, refers to the movement in literature and the arts which emphasized strong emotions, both exploring and celebrating them for all that they are worth. For Jehan, the idea of being a proper romantic means exploring and embracing all emotion, most of all in being true to himself and his authentic emotions.
What this means, in more simple terms, is that Jehan embraces all emotions, and expressions of them, good and bad. It is common to find him embracing many emotions, some, which society today would probably scorn. During Jehan's last years of life, this expression of emotion was largely embraced by society as a manly pursuit, and it was not uncommon to see grown men weeping in the public eye. Jehan has, himself, given into this emotion more often than not, and while he is usually quiet amongst his more boisterous friends, or at least those who command more of a presence, when the appropriate moment of expressing emotion comes, he'll certainly embrace it for what it is worth.
Jehan's brand of Romanticism, the things that move him most, deals with high emotion and its expression, but there is more to it than simply that. For Jehan, much of life revolves around the soul, and also of the supernatural. It is not uncommon to see him worshipping an ancient god who he has discovered in the pages of an old text, performing rituals he has found in dusty old tomes, and visiting cemeteries, both for inspiration from the dead, and to be in the presence of so many souls he may befriend and find communion with at the same time. Along with this, he does maintain his Catholic faith, though he disagrees with a key tenant of the religion by maintaining the idea that there are other gods in the world, and by worshiping those gods along with Christ. He does love the Blessed Mother quite a lot as well, and certainly comes to Mary in times of great need, finding a lot of comfort in praying to her.
When one first meets him, Jehan seems to be the shy and quiet guy in the corner, but this is not always the case. When he is moved to speak of something, he forgets his shyness, and speaks, rather eloquently, on whatever topic is at hand. Usually these topics do have to do with matters of the spiritual. For example,in canon, he is shown defending the ancient gods and their existence in a debate with his friends. Most of the rest of the time, Jehan is rather quiet, and often blushes when he is addressed, though when he is moved, all of his shyness seems to melt away.
Besides his interest in the spiritual, Jehan's romanticism is very rooted in a time and place, particularly Paris, and he does keep an eye on mankind as well. Hugo states that Jehan has two minds, one that looks toward heaven and one that looks to mankind(1109). In the attitude that looks to mankind, Jehan focuses on social issues, and can be found analyzing and discussing both the issues and what might be done to solve some of them. He certainly has a soft spot in his heart for children and can often be found weeping over the gamins and orphans in the streets of Paris. When he can, Jehan is inclined to help them as best he can, usually by asking them to run errands for which he can overpay them a little, as he does not want to insult anyone with out and out charity.
In terms of his appearance, Jehan is certainly something of an individual and can be found wearing clothing combinations that are, well, somewhat bizarre. It's not uncommon to see him wearing old clothes he found in a trunk that might belong to his grandfather, or purchasing old costumes from theatres to add to his collection. He also does a bit of creative tailoring, and the result is an odd sort of mix and match style that really makes him stand out. Shy as he is, Jehan does enjoy turning heads with his combinations and gets incredibly insulted when people laugh at his clothes.
In spite of his usual shyness, Jehan does enjoy a lot of activities that tie in with his Romantic side. He attends parties which may involve seances, drinking wine out of skulls and focusing strongly on the occult. The odder the activity, the more likely Jehan is to enjoy it. He's slept in a coffin to help him consider the position of the dead, eats hashish and other activities to induce hallucinations, and very much longs to be a part of the spiritual world. It is one of his great regrets that he cannot stay in the world that he visits during this time, as he rather enjoys it, thank you.
Among Jehan's favorite activities, writing his poetry, playing his flute, and gardening are pretty key hobbies for him, though he DOES hope to publish his poems someday. So far, he's hidden copies of his poems in various places in his room, to the point that he probably does not know where all of his drafts have gone. Since he lives in a state of organized chaos, this is not as bad as it might seem.
Since Jehan also is in a constant state of needing something or someone to love, his rooms have played host to a number of companions in the years he's been here. Besides mistresses and the pretty young men he sometimes spends his nights with, Jehan HAS taken in orphaned or injured animals who he tries to care for until they are set for life in the wild, or until his landlord finds out. Given that he lives in Paris, these injured animals are usually or pigeons, and Jehan does have a flock of the latter who he regularly feeds and otherwise plays with. He loves to nurture anything he can, and would have someday made a wonderful father if fate had not stepped in on that front.
Although it is hard to see it at first, Jehan is quite brave as well. While he does not always step up to be a leader, he is certainly willing to throw himself into causes that he supports, such as the republican one that he and his friends have embraced. Hoping for social change, Jehan, and his friends from the society of Les Amis de l'ABC (Friends of the ABC, pronounced as abased, but they pose as an educational society), throw themselves into various activities to support the republican cause and were present on the barricades during the 1830 July Revolution (though Jehan left the barricade to defend the Louvre and its art from being destroyed in the citywide rioting), and took to barricades again in 1832. These acts, and other smaller ones, such as publishing documents, helping to organize workers' strikes, and participating in rallies, are all forms of treason, and bear a heavy burden for the person caught participating in them.
Actually, Jehan's bravest moment comes when he must pay the price for these actions. The second of Les Amis to die, Jehan is caught while slipping over to the other side of the barricade in order to gain information from the National Guard, a spying trip that no one authorized or suggested. The price for his actions is rather great, as Jehan is executed by firing squad for treason. During his death, Jehan maintains his courage, and even a little defiance as he lets his last words ring, loud enough to be heard by the entire barricade. "Vive la France, Vive l'avenir !(Long live France, Long Live The Future)".
Even a future in which he'll be turned into a monster, apparently. Jehan will probably react to the change in himself with a lot of interest. It is the sort of transformation which will allow him plenty of opportunity to debate and consider many questions of existence, not the least of them being being the question of what makes a man a man, and other existential thoughts along that path. While he would hate to be a monster who attacks people, and would fight against harming any humans, at least at first, it WILL give him ample time to think and to reflect on all of those questions that he so loves thinking of, and discussing them with others.
5-10 Key Character Traits:
Shy
Awkward
Bookish
Curious
Intrepid :)
Brave
Romantic (as in the movement and genre of literature)
Gentle
Quiet
Resilient
Would you prefer a monster that FITS your character’s personality, CONFLICTS with it, or EITHER? In Jehan's case, I would much prefer one that FITS his personality. He'll have an easier time coming to terms with things if it is from a perspective that he can identify with and find some part of himself in.
Opt-Outs:
Wendigo, Naga, Minotaur,Troll, Demon
Roleplay Sample:There are two threads beginningHere
